1st Rodborough Guides are the oldest Girlguiding group in Gloucestershire, founded in 1914. Alex, Laura and Amelie, current members of the unit, have written (and designed) this article to tell us what they get up to now…
1st Rodborough Guides are based at the Old Endowed School (TOES), and are open to all girls aged 10 to 14. Recently, some of the guides chose to complete the mixology badge, making mocktails for our Baden Powell award evening. We are the last girls in the unit to earn this, which is the highest guide award. Guides now earn the Gold award.
Within the last year, our guides have taken part in many camps including a sleepover at Go Bananas and there are many more camps to come in the near future, such as a Harry Potter themed sleepover in November.
We have interviewed a few of the guides who have joined at different times, to see what they like about guides most. “It’s great!” says Gracie, “It’s a bit of time away from to home to be with my friends from guides, it makes me happy.”
Ella, one of our newest guides, says, “I really enjoyed last week when we made mocktails!”
Our oldest guide, Lizzie, who has been at guides for nearly 3 years, quotes “Guides has been a really fun experience and has allowed me to make so many new friends, go on so many amazing camps.
I have learned so many new valuable life skills and also got multiple badges along the way which I am hoping to soon sew onto my very own camp blanket. I’m sad to be leaving guides but this has been an amazing experience.”
At guides we do a range of activities including many games, arts and craft, outdoor activities and baking. We are working on a ‘future girl’ project trying to be a more environmentally friendly group, we are making eco-bricks and bees wax wraps. Last year, we also did a vote for women badge and looked at the importance of equality.
The leaders get to join in the fun, and learn some new things, too. If you would like to be a guide or help support our unit and volunteer the links to join us are below.
We would like to continue this guide group for another 100 years but that is only possible with the help of adult volunteers. Thank you.
