A family business where good food is sold with heart.
Dave, Sally, Nicky and Will came to the business in 2013 and have since become familiar friendly faces on Kendrick Street, keeping high standards and welcoming customers to their handsome delicatessen.
Enjoy the busy atmosphere downstairs or relax upstairs in the spacious seating area with its pretty dresser, wood floor and stained glass windows overlooking the street. Upstairs is also the place to go to browse the full selection of teas and cakes. But if you’re in the mood for ice cream, then out front is the place to be. There you can choose from a selection of local ices from the charming vintage ice cream bike, and sit at the outdoor tables watching the world go by, sheltered from the hot sun or summer drizzle by the generous awning. To offer something a little different, the ice creams and sorbets are sourced from Dolcetti in Cirencester. The flavours change periodically so come back often and see what’s new. The ice cream is also a key ingredient in the deli’s luxurious milkshakes.
The deli stocks a wide selection of items, often from smaller producers, so it’s a good place to find something more unusual. Hobbs bread can be ordered in advance (order by 12pm to collect fresh the next day) to avoid waste. They offer lots of British products as well as treats from around the world such as delectable pastas and pestos from Italy. Their coffee is provided by Ethical Addictions in Gloucester. Coffee sales have helped to build community halls and fund charitable projects in the coffee-farming regions – look out for the Ethical Addictions newsletter posted up in the deli’s window. There is also a wide variety of teas to try in or buy. Ethical sourcing is a priority and they proudly stock Bristol-based Mortiers single-estate teas, directly sourced from Sri Lanka.
Nicky told me more about the food on offer. “People come in for light lunches to eat in or take away. Quiche and sandwiches are popular this time of year. We have a variety of salads so you can pick and choose as you fancy. That way it’s easy for us to cater for people on diets who are avoiding certain things – you can choose exactly what goes on your plate. We also make suggestions when customers want help choosing. We have tried most of our products ourselves so we know what goes well and we get to know what people like too. Stroud being the community that it is, you get to know your customers really well and can provide a personal service. Some customers like a particular sandwich made a certain way, so we write their sandwiches up on the wall to ensure we get them right even if that customer is served by a different person!”
If you’re shopping for a summer event such as picnicking or entertaining, all foods at the downstairs counter are sold by weight so you can take a little bit of everything without going over budget. Try before you buy, take suggestions and sample tastes, then make up a platter, a picnic hamper or a gift hamper.
The hampers make a thoughtful personalised gift for someone special because you can build them around the person’s tastes, for example the cheese lover, the vegetarian, the coeliac or the chilli-head! Just tell the staff what sorts of things you would like and they’ll hand pick the contents for you and pack it beautifully for you to collect later. For smaller gifts you can also make up selections of teas and hot chocolates or choose from the range of beers, wines, ciders and gins. Ask Will for recommendations!
